Description
Photograph album of crew and German cruiser SMS SEEADLER surrounding her visit to the German port of Tsingtao, Nanking, Shanghai, Korea, and a few other Asian ports in 1904. Following the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War in February 1904, Seeadler was ordered to Tsingtau to be prepared for any possible hostilities involving Germany, and these images were likely taken during and after her Tsingtao port call. There are in all 56 photographs, nearly all 6.5 x 5 in. and mounted. Almost every image was taken either aboard the SEEADLER or in a Chinese port and typically show officers and crewmen in candid and posed images, reefing sails, bands, marching, etc., the naval artillery headquarters in Tsingtao, Chinese villagers, etc. Most of the images, back to back, are disbound, but are otherwise very good to fine. Sold with a second album German naval album containing 88 mounted images, various sizes and almost all very faded, apparently candid photos of a German family and voyage to Japan.
