In "The good, the bad-- and Philip Evergood" an essay by Roy R. Behrens, this etching is noted to have been created in a collaborative effort between Phillip Evergood and John Page, who was a printmaking professor at the University of Northern Iowa. Evergood was teaching at the university during the summers of 1957 and 1958.

The collaboration came after Evergood told Page he had once tried etching and had enjoyed the process. So, Page found him a copper plate to work on. He late printed multiple proofs in his studio before Evergood was happy with the image and an edition of 15 was printed.

The image satirizes a magazine ad for the Bell Telephone Company which was popular at the time.

Philip Evergood was an American-born artist who grew up in London. He graduated from Eton College in 1919 and continued his studies at the Slade School in London. He moved back to the U.S. and settled in New York City in 1923, where began studying at Art Students League under painter George Luks. Evergood was deeply involved in social causes, some of which were quite radical at the time. He was also an advocate for proper treatment of artists. He participated in a sit-down strike in 1936 to protest layoffs from the Federal Art Project, which had supported countless artists during the Great Depression. Evergood worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression, creating murals, and served as president of the Artists Union. He was also an active member of the American Artists' Congress.
