Helen Edell (Edelman) Sloan (1902 - 1995). Watercolor on paper. 25 x 15 in. (sight), 35 x 26 in. (framed)Helen Edelman was born on June 13, 1902, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Frank Edelman and Antoinette (Strauss) Edelman. She studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, Illinois. In 1939, she married Frederick E. Sloan. It is not known when she began using the name Edell, or its origin. It may be derived from her maiden surname, but this is only conjecture. Helen was a commercial artist and designer in Chicago prior to her move to California where in the 1940s she began working at Walt Disney Studios. In 1948, her line drawings/ illustrations were included in the book Fashions in Furnishings: A Guidepost to Decorating.She was a member of Laguna Beach Art Association. She lived in Laguna Beach for many years and exhibited her oils and watercolors locally and in national exhibitions. Helen Edell Sloan passed away on October 5, 1995, in Laguna Hills, California.
