Description
early 19th Century, papier-mache, commemorating the first flight of a hot air balloon by the Montgolfier brothers in 1780s Annonay, France, with numerous figures in landscape watching a balloon take off into the air; the bottom side of the box inscribed 'SIC ITUR AD ASTRA' [thus one goes to the stars : such is the way to immortality] around a fleur-de-lis d. 1-3/8 dia. 3-7/8 in.
