Spectacular Ronald Reagan Fine Designer Plate by B&G Bing & Grondahl, Denmark

Single salad plate with the pattern 618, manufactured by B&G, Bing and Grondahl of Copenhagen, Denmark, 7.5" in diameter, with a delicate floral pattern, with a gilt rim. Christie's lot sticker and University Archives Authentication tag hand numbered and signed by John Reznikoff. Fine condition.

A lovely, delicate designer piece from the Reagans which was part of their dinnerware collection owned and used by them at their Bel Air, California home. This salad plate is from the respected Danish firm of Bing and Grondahl in the pattern of Saxion Flower 618. The firm has a rich history, being founded in 1853 by Grøndahl, who was a figurine maker for the Royal Danish Porcelain Factory, and the Bing brothers, who were art and book dealers. The factory was located on the corner of Vesterbrogade and Rahbek Allé in the Vesterbro area, at that time outside the city of Copenhagen, Denmark. Grøndahl initially began the company to produce bisque figurines modeled on the neoclassical sculptures of Bertel Thorvaldsen. The company extended production to include high style dinnerware and coffee sets. In 1987 the company merged with its primary competitor, the Royal Porcelain Factory under the name Royal Copenhagen.

The pattern of Saxion Flower 618 is a lovely floral design with delicate small scallop texturing to the outer rim, which aligned with Nancy Reagan's personal style.  The pattern is a timeless classic and embodies the union of simplicity and elegance.  Mrs. Nancy Reagan was well known for her interest in elegant designer classics and the Reagan's choice of dinnerware was no exception. This was shown during her years as First Lady as her flair for entertaining and hosting transformed the aura of style and sophistication to the White House.  “She felt the White House should exemplify the best,” said Mark Weinberg, who worked on Ronald Reagan’s campaigns, in the White House Press Office. The first lady handled her life both in and out of the White House with the same conviction, and this stunning piece from their personal dinnerware collection personifies Nancy Reagan's attention to style and her love of timeless sophisticated design.

The Reagan auction saw record prices for a celebrity including about $200,000 for cowboy boots and $100,000 for a sheet of Presidential doodles. This incomplete set was purchased with the hopes that individual items could be offered, so as to share something intimate, private and Presidential with clients who might not wish to own a large group. The Reagans entertained a regalia of people at their home ranging from Heads of State and Politicos to the glitterati friends from the Hollywood days.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
