Grover Cleveland as Pres. ALS Newspaper Attacks on Him, Likely Due to Panic of 1893

Three page autograph letter signed on bi-fold stationary with Executive Manion letterhead. Signed by Grover Cleveland as President "Grover Cleveland", and dated "February 23 1894". Fine condition, and important.

Ex. The Forbes Collection. Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), American owner-publisher of Forbes magazine, and consummate collector,  amassed one of the most substantial and broad collections of such breadth and depth that it filled a half-dozen residences, and sat on three continents. Many of his manuscripts were sold in Multi-million dollar sales By , Christie's in the early 2000’s. The Forbes name is considered to be the apex of provenance when attached to an item like the above. A fascinating letter written to George Green of New York, commenting on unfavorable newspaper and magazine articles on Cleveland, probably as a result the panic of 1893, and what he is going to do about them. Cleveland writes: "I have read your letter to the Times … and I kindly thank you for it. I did not see the communication to which it is an answer, for I do not read the Park or Harper's Weekly. They have done all in their power to aid the men and the political methods which they have professed to hate. Much that happens here of a discouraging character is stimulated and made strong by the coldness of shamefully treated, and the enemies of all I am honestly trying to do have been encouraged by some of those who pass as reformers. They shall not, however, drive me from my purpose to constantly struggle to redeem all pledges I have made and to continue a service in which I supposed thy, too, were interested. I shall give no quarter from those who fight either in front or rear"

Cleveland was an extremely honest, hardworking President beset, as most Presidents are and have been by problems, generally beyond their control, and subject to attacks by the press. The panic of 1893 was just ending, and of course this had provided many of the recent attacks on Cleveland. The Panic had been caused by a drain of gold from the government, and Cleveland had done all in his power to stop it. A fascinating letter giving Cleveland's philosophy of life in public service, reflected so well in this last words on his deathbed, "I have tried so hard to do right".
