Title: "How My Family Encouraged Me to Become an Artist!" Complete Two-Page Story Original Art
Place Published:
Publisher:
Date Published: 1987
Description:

Ink and correction fluid on bristol board, mounted to foam core, measuring 14" x 17" not including mounts, signed "Dori Seda" on first page. Fine condition, adhesive residue and abrasions to margins, not affecting image area. Due to her premature demise, very few stories by Seda exist, and those that do seldom come to market.

In her brief life and career as a cartoonist, Dori Seda (1951-1988) created a body of funny, perverse, intimate, imaginative and honest work that "placed herself on ground not previously trod by any American artist.... Not Charles Bukowski. Not William Burroughs. Not R. Crumb or S. Clay Wilson.... [Her work is characterized by] her ability to look at things others have turned away from." -Bob Levin, "I Don't Fuck My Dog: The Life & Art of Dori Seda," Outlaws, Rebels, Freethinkers and Pirates: Essays on Cartoons and Cartoonists [Fantagraphics: 2005].

In this story, originally published in Weirdo #20 (1987), Seda tells how her family encouraged her youthful dreams of being an artist, which is all very wonderful until practicality rears its ugly head ("I wonder if they'll take food stamps for a refill of coffee"). A year after this story appeared in print, the artist was dead from respiratory failure after catching the flu, a grim loss to the world of comics.
