GEORGE IV: (1762-1830) King of the United Kingdom 1820-30. A.L.S., with his initials G P, as Prince of Wales, one page, 4to, Carlton House, 24th January 1793 ('Thursday morning, ¾ pt. 9 am') to Elphinstone. The Prince informs his correspondent that he shall be at home the whole morning '& at any time that is most convenient to Mr. Pitt & Mr. Dundas, from twelve till past two o'clock to call at Carlton House, I shall be in readiness to receive them'. With blank integral leaf. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG £200-300 William Pitt (1759-1806) The Younger. British Prime Minister 1783-1801, 1801, 1804-06. In 1788 Pitt had faced a major crisis when King George III fell victim to a mysterious illness in the form of a mental disorder. With the monarch potentially incapable of fulfilling his constitutional duties, Parliament would have needed to appoint a Regent to rule in his place. All parties agreed that the only viable candidate was the King's eldest son, Prince George, Prince of Wales. However, the Prince was a supporter of Charles James Fox and had the Prince come to power it was inevitable that he would have dismissed Pitt. Fortunately for the Prime Minister, Parliament spent many months debating the technicalities of a Regency Bill and King George III recovered in February 1789.
