Description
Tempera on wood, dimensions 35.3x30.8 cm, 19th Century. Crowned as Queen of Heaven, Mary stands in the center with Christ on her left arm. In the corners above are the sun and moon, below her feet are clouds signifying her divine status. Around her is an almondshaped mandorla of glory. Above, in miniature, is depicted the New Testament Trinity. The icon depicts the usual iconographic type "Mother of God of Joy to Those who Grieve" in that the group around her are the hungry, naked, grieving and rows of bishops, monks, and ascetics. We can understand that they join with the Virgin in bringing joy to the poor and oppressed forming a gathering (synaxis) supporting her and participating in her work. The needy, hungry and sick to whom the image and it`s meaning is directed, are only present by implication but not shown.
