Item Details
Description
Antique long barrel gun 19th C. Measures 59 3/4", Barrell 44". Brief Description I was given by a very helpful bidder here on INVALUABLE PLATFORM. This is an full stock, single barrel smooth bore percussion black powder gun circa 1820-1840 (dimensions), which has had a spurious date of 1779 stamped on the stock at some time most likely in the 20th century by someone attempting to fool people unfamiliar with antique guns that this gun was from the revolutionary war period to enhance its value. Neither barrel nor lock are appropriate for the revolutionary war flintlock technology period but do match 1820-40s era cap and ball percussion technology. Ramrod is later replacement, lacking end ferrule, which is not unusual on guns in this condition. Fitted with a percussion or flintlock rifle’s double-set trigger, which is inappropriate for a smoothbore gun, this may be a gun assembled from parts. Condition: Antique, wall hanger, rust pitting overall, NRA poor, brass appears over cleaned, wood looks refinished and shy of poorly fitted hardware. — under no circumstances should it be attempted to be fired. No FFL required.Insert the dimensions you’ve measured where I noted. Use what you like of the above which is the best I can do without handling the firearm. You should post a photo of the non-lock side as well. Using pins to hold the barrel to the fore-end is a sign of low-end gunsmithing. All in all, it’s a good decorator piece, but not a collector’s gun.
