Description
1868 Arabian 1001 Nights Illustrated Ali Baba Aladdin Sinbad English Lane Harvey
“A loss that can be repaired by money is not of such very great importance.”
– The Arabian Nights
During the Golden Age of Islam in South and West Asia, a collection of tales and stories was gathered and called “One Thousand and One Arabian Nights”. It was first translated into French by Antoine Galland in 1704-17 and helped establish a positive attitude toward Islam in the Western world. It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights.
This scarce 1868 English printing of ‘Arabian Nights’ is often considered superior to any other English edition. It is profusely illustrated and is translated by famous English lexicographer E.W. Lane. Lane himself writes:
“There is one work, however, which represents most admirable pictures of the manners and customs of the Arabs, and particularly of those of the Egyptians; it is 'The Thousand and One Nights; or, Arabian Nights' Entertainments:' if the English reader had possessed a close translation of it with sufficient illustrative notes, I might almost have spared myself the labour of the present undertaking.”
It is filled with 600 impressive woodcut illustrations from the art of William Harvey, as well as some of the most famous stories – ‘Aladdin’, ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’, and ‘Sinbad the Sailor’.
