A lovely genre scene by artist Walter Dendy Sadler, who produced more than 170 prints in his lifetime. A number of these show happy people enjoying the pleasures of drink, food, and leisure activities. Sadler's compositions are famous for depicting authentic costumes, as well as furniture, stemware, and other decorative arts. Sadler first exhibited at the Dudley Gallery in 1872, and the following year exhibited at the Royal Academy which continued through the 1890s. He was a member of the Royal British Academy, and also exhibited at the Royal Academy. Sadler is best known for depicting his contemporaries in domestic and daily life pursuits, emphasizing comical expressions to highlight their somewhat greedy ways. Prior to painting a scene, Sadler put together elaborate settings for local villagers to pose as his models. What’s more, he oftentimes used the same props and models in successive paintings only with different costumes. Among his favorite settings were a domestic home, an inn, a garden, a lawyers office, and a golf course.
