The Levant or Egypt, Middle Bronze Age II/Middle Kingdom, Egyptian Dynasties 11 through 13, ca. 2000 to 1800 BCE. A bronze, crescent-shaped axe with a bulbous detail at its center and three places for attachment to a handle. It was cast using the lost wax technique. The Middle Bronze Age was a time throughout the Near East and Egypt that saw increased fortifications and the rise of palace-towns that controlled nearby villages and vied for power. An axe like this may have been used in warfare, but it would have been ultimately deposited as part of a warrior burial. Elite males of all ages were buried, often in caves together with their extended family, and interestingly, with axes like this one at their heads. Small loss from one tip and a few chips from the edges, but overall the form is very well preserved with a rich, dark green patina and some light deposits on the surface.
