Description
Considered by many to be the holy grail of 19th century baseball woodcuts, this double page illustration appeared in the Nov 5, 1865 issue of Frank Leslies Weekly. It is one of the few contemporary pieces to feature an image of the famous pitcher Jame Creighton, considered to be the first professional player. He passed away in 1862. This piece was professionally hand colored in the early 20th century, making it one of the few color examples in existence. Titled Great Base Ball Match Between the Atlantic and Eckford Clubs of Brooklyn at the Union Base Ball Grounds, Brooklyn, E.D., Oct. 13, With Portraits Of The Leading Players Of The Principal Clubs Of New York, Brooklyn And Newark. Members of both teams are featured at the top and bottom including Mort Rogers, who eventually produced a series of photographic baseball scorecards that are some of the most desirable and expensive in the hobby. Finally, Henry Chadwick is featured along the right edge, once again, a rare contemporary image of the famous Baseball chronicler. Framed in the first half of the 20th Century. This was Hall of Famer Joe Cronins personal copy. 15 x 20 inches visible. Framed to 18.5 x 23.5 inches. A special piece for many reasons. This piece was consigned directly to us from the Cronin Family and comes with a Gaynors Fine Consignments LOA picturing the item and stating the provenance.
