A small boxlock flintlock "turn off" pocket or muff pistol, dating about 1810-1830. The pistol has a center-hung hammer and is loaded by unscrewing the barrel (hence the name "turn off,") pouring powder into the breech and placing a ball on top of the concave top of the powder chamber. The barrel could then be screwed tightly back into place over the ball. The pistol thus could deliver a comparatively powerful shot at close range and the pistol was favored for carrying in a coat or vest pocket. We tend to think of them as ladies' pistols from their small size, but even Stephen Decature carried one as a back-up piece in a pocket during a naval boarding action, using it to kill an opponent in a close-in fight.

The metal has been cleaned bright. The side panels of the receiver are engraved, but the details are light, but a retailer's name, Mathey, is still very visible. The grip is a replacement.
