Western Europe, France or Italy, ca. second half of the 16th century CE. A sturdy hammered-steel burgonet-style infantry helmet of a domed form with a thin peripheral rim, a trio of incised semicircular grooves on either side of a striated central crest, a pointed brim that articulates on a pair of rivets, and a neck flap on the verso attached with two additional rivets. The rectangular cheek pieces maneuver along thin hinges and have flared lower flaps, and five perforations form a minimalist cruciform air vent. The burgonet helmet was used by soldiers in every level of the military during the 16th century and was most popular among light cavalry units. The open, hinged design improved upon the design of its solid predecessor by enabling increased peripheral vision and air supply without sacrificing the protection of critical areas. An enclosed hallmark "N" is present on the underside of the neck flap. Size: 8.75" W x 9.625" H (22.2 cm x 24.4 cm)

One ear flap hinge replaced. Small areas of repair to top of dome and crest, with resurfacing along break lines. Nicks, minor abrasions, and slight bending to peripheries, ear flaps, brim, and neck flap, with loosening to some rivets, minor pitting, and light encrustations along underside. Light earthen deposits mostly within interior, and nice patina throughout.
