Description
Circa 1930 hand tinted paper photograph of well dressed, large man posed next to an art deco style photographer's prop. An old, poorly written, manuscript note accompanies the image and appears to read: "Jacobs, well known wrestler in years gone by. One of Akron's best known sports characters is Eli Jacobs who has spent 25 years at Goodyear in the calender & mill room at plants 1 & 2. In 1900's Eli was the heavyweight wrestling championship of summit County -- A title held eight years. He lost the championship in 1916 at Bartenta (?) to a challenger who outweighed him by 25 pounds. In 1911 he wrestled a bear at Silver Lake Park and won the match. ...?illegible.., 1943." Approximate dimensions are 10-1/2" X 13-1/2". Unmounted. condition: surface soiling, toning, edge nicks and bumps, foxing spots, purple stain in area of bottom of jacket as seen in scans.
