Description
Frederick Mershimer (b. 1958 American) "Chance Encounter". Frederick Mershimer sets up a "Chance Encounter" between a man and a woman at the northeast corner of 24th Street toward the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower. It recalls a 1930s image by Martin Lewis titled "Chance Meeting." "Chance Encounter" was introduced in connection with the artist's exhibition at Associated American Artists. This image is in the permanent collection of the Tampa Museum of Art and was created in an edition of 120. The image was printed by John Micoff. Retif and Salzer #49. Signed and dated 1993 in lower right corner, titled and numbered in lower left corner, in pencil 59/120. Color mezzotint and aquatint on paper, with hand-coloring. Medium is etching. Professionally matted and framed. Original label on back reads Gallery 71, Lexington Ave, NYC. Frederick Mershimer’s cityscapes are inspired by his Brooklyn home. With the mezzotint process he evokes the subtle shadows of the evening or of a recent snow and also the differing textures of concrete and brownstone. Mershimer is an important contributor to the revival and growing popularity of a 400 year old process once abandoned as too labor intensive. In Frame 17 1/2"x19"x1". Weight 4 ps 10 oz. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate.
