Item Details

Description

Western/Central Europe, probably Germany or France, Medieval period, ca. 11th to 14th century CE. A forged-iron axe head of a tall form with a rectangular blade head bearing a sharpened edge, a stocky neck, and a trapezoidal hafting shaft with a flat butt end. The neck in the middle of the axe head spine suggests this was used for utilitarian purposes, though its size indicates the potentiality for being utilized in hand-to-hand combat or perhaps as a throwing axe. Size: 4" W x 4.9" H (10.2 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in May 2011; ex-private Nurnberg, Germany collection, found in the ground near Bavaria, Germany
