Jack Kerouac Personally Owned Scrapbook Photos Featuring Cats!

A collection of 15 photographs personally owned by Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous mid-century American writer who brought us On The Road (1957). Provenance: This piece will be accompanied by our Certificate of Authentication as well as an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executer of the Kerouac Estate. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, friend and brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack’s wife.

The lot consists of a small scrapbook album of 11 black and white Polaroid snapshots of Kerouac, Kerouac's mother Gabrielle-Ange Lévesque (1895-1973), Kerouac's cats, and Kerouac's last house in St. Petersburg, Florida. The album is stamped on one of the back pages with both the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp, in addition to the raised blind seal from Executer of the Estate, John Sampas. The cats, a pair of short-haired orange tigers, feature in 10 of the 11 photos engaged in a variety of particularly adorable activities ranging from sleeping upside down to running across the back of the sofa. The photo of the St. Petersburg house is annotated verso in an unknown hand. The photo of Kerouac's mother sitting next to a wall calendar dates these photos to ca. January 1967. Isolated glue residue. Several photos are partly overexposed. Else in near fine condition. Average size 4.25" x 3.25".

The remaining four photos (three color and one black and white) depict Kerouac holding a long-haired black cat and posing next to a Halloween pumpkin; two photos of Kerouac's third wife Stella Sampas (1918-1990); and a photo of Stella's relative Tony Sampas. The color photos were taken in St. Petersburg, Florida, ca. 1960s. The photos of Stella are annotated verso in part: "photo [taken] by Jack Kerouac". Light overall toning. One photo of Stella shows isolation discoloration at top; the photo of Tony Sampas has been trimmed. Else very good to near fine. Average size 3.75" x 3.5".

Kerouac's love of cats is well-documented. His favorite cat, a Persian calico named Tyke, appears in his novel Big Sur (1962).

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
