Dwight & Mamie Eisenhower Dual Signed 1962 Republican Congressional Dinner Program

A dinner program signed by both 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) as "Dwight D Eisenhower", and by First Lady Mamie Eisenhower (1896-1979) as "Mamie Doud Eisenhower" along the bottom edge. The program is from a Republican Congressional Dinner that took place at Washington, D.C.'s Sheraton-Park Hotel on Friday, June 22, 1962, and was presumably signed by the former presidential couple at that time. A vertical fold runs through the center of each page, and affects the signed "h" of "Dwight" and the signed "ou" of "Doud". With expected wrinkles, light overall toning, and a few scuffs on the back. Else very good to near fine. 8.5" x 11".

The front cover, decorated with a view of the U.S. Capitol Building, opens to reveal a list of dinner committee members on the second page; a program and menu (including "mignardise a la Republican" as a dessert option) on the third page; and a list of Republican members of Congress on the last page.

The keynote speaker of this Republican Congressional Dinner was Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose presidential successor, the young and dynamic John F. Kennedy, had picked up the mantle of the Democratic Party and recently extended it into the "New Frontier". Eisenhower delivered a speech to assembled Republican Congressmen referred to in the Congressional Record as Eisenhower Calls for Republican Congress if America is to Stay Free.

In his speech, Eisenhower incited the G.O.P. to vigorously oppose the current administration's policies. If the United States had any future, Eisenhower argued, it was based on the limited role of government, restricted and reasonable spending, and the streamlining of government bureaucracy. "A sure-footed and dedicated Republican Congress can help preserve the necessary balance and perspective in government--even as our forefathers intended," Eisenhower concluded.

A fascinating glimpse into the Republican Party's rebuttal of JFK.
