The Future of the American Negro. Boston: Small, Maynard & Company, 1899. Red cloth stamped in gilt, top edge gilt. First Edition.
Two volumes, including a first edition of Washington's first major work, along with signed correspondence from Washington to William Dennis, a Canadian senator, thanking him for hosting Washington and his family while they were in Halifax. Washington's letter is typed on Tuskegee Institute letterhead, signed at the bottom, and dated October 12, 1915, just over a month before his death. In it, he notes that he has sent that copy of "Up From Slavery" for Dennis to read. Also included is Dennis's reply, dated November 8, 1915, with his comments on the work.
Condition
Some wear to covers; front hinge cracked on "The Future...", back hinge cracked on "Up From...", some page toning and foxing; overall very good.
