Civil War 4th Vermont Soldier Killed Dog Tag
Item Details
Description
Standard Eagle style, War of 1861, Civil War soldier's identification disc, or dog tag. Excellent condition. Filled out for, and worn by Ira A. Stevens of the 4th Vermont. He had joined up September 21st 1861. He reenlisted in December 1863. He took a rebel bullet that killed him May 5th 1864. The 4th Vermont was part of the famed Vermont Brigade and saw heavy action. It fought at Antietam, served at Gettysburg, and had the life stomped out of it at their mauling at The Wilderness. At The Wilderness Colonel Foster was badly wounded in the thigh. Out of 551 men engaged seven officers were killed and eleven wounded, one mortally, 41 enlisted men were killed and 223 wounded, 43 mortally (Stevens is in this group), and four enlisted men were missing. This was the greatest number of casualties suffered by any Vermont regiment in a single battle, and one of the highest casualty rates for a single battle suffered by any Union regiment in the war. Our man Stevens was severely wounded on May 5th and lingered for two weeks, finally succumbing to his wound on May 24th, 1864. The photos showing soldiers of the 4th Vermont and the brigade monument are for illustrative purposes only.

We are happy to ship by UPS or US Mail... whichever you prefer. Smaller items are generally cheaper to send by US Mail. Larger items should go by UPS. Materials, Packing, and Shipping on this item is $XXXX. Insurance is $1.50 per hundred. UPS charges $5 for the signature required service, US Post office signature service is 3.50. The insurance and signature service are optional, but there can be no insurance coverage without the signature required, service. If you decline signature service and/or insurance and the neighbor kid steals the box off your porch, or if it gets delivered to the wrong address, or if the delivery truck crashes and burns . . . You are out of luck. I highly recommend the insurance and signature service. Feel free to call to discuss shipping options. (419) 842-1863 11am to 6pm eastern time zone.
