Description
Artist: Rock Newcomb | b. 1945
Title: Hopi Classics
Signed l/r: Rock Newcomb ©
Media: Acrylic on panel
Dimensions: 16 by 12 inches
Condition: Very Good
Condition details: This painting is in good condition. Paint appears to be chipping in the upper left edge of the piece. Closer inspection under ultraviolet light reveals normal fluorescence of artist's pigments, and no signs of restoration. The piece is framed in a rustic light brown frame. The frame is in very good condition with normal wear. Verso on panel: "Hopi Classics” features and old Katsina, circa A.D. 1900, and a lovely bowl of the same time period. The Katsina is very weathered with the undercoat of white kaolin clay showing in the actual light red-brown cottonwood in evidence. Much of the original yellow and blue paints have totally faded with the exception of the "blossoms” on the head of the flute katsina. It is in the collection of the Amerind foundation museum in southeast Arizona. The bowl is a very unique shape reminding me of the head of a bear. It is in the collection of the Eiteljorg museum in Indianapolis, Indiana. The arista [sic] (string of peppers) belong to the artist.
