This is an excellent beaded and hitched horsehair war club from the Comanche Native American Indians and dating to the early 1900’s. The war club or dance club shows a red sandstone carved head with two cone ends and is secured to the wood haft with a wrap of parfleche rawhide which is tightly fit into the groove carved into the stone. The parfleche wrap is covered with Indian tanned hide which has been accented by a linear geometric beaded design in all early glass trade seed beads of chalk white, red and green which is sewn with sinew and shows some slight bead loss. The haft is completely covered in hitched horsehair showing natural dyed colors of black, white, red, green and yellow in a spiral linear design. The top has tufts of horsehair tassels in white, orange and purple, a fine artful addition. The base shows a drop of natural brown horsehair. Horsehair hitching is a complicated and intricately detailed craft. Its possibly that the Comanche who made this piece spent some time at Montana State Deer Lodge Prison where he learned his horsehair hitching craft. Provenance: From a Lewistown, Montana Collection. Overall the club measures 30”L with drop and the head is 5”L x 2.5”H x 2.5”D.
