1898 1ed Mission to Menelik Africa Nile River Sudan Voyage Illustrated MAPS
Gleichen served with the Grenadier Guards on the Nile in 1884-85, and later at Dongola in the Sudan in 1896. In an attempt to establish relations with the Abyssinian King Menelik, the British government sent a mission, which proved highly successful. Both parties recognized the trading rights of the other and Menelik proclaimed the Mahdists of the neighboring Sudan as enemies. Gleichen, accompanied the mission as an Intelligence Office, and was in charge of water arrangements. His book ‘With the Mission to Menelik’ is an account of the mission as he recollects. Gleichen includes details of life in Addis Ababa, aspects of Abyssinian culture, natives along the voyage, and much more.
This 1898 first edition includes 9 full-page photogravure engravings, 2 fold-out maps, and numerous illustrations throughout!
