Description
**Originally Listed At $600**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A beautiful banded agate intaglio featuring an image of Hercules, standing contrapposto, with one hand on a staff. His body ripples with musculature and he has a prominent beard. The story of Hercules was a popular one in ancient Rome (with much of it derived, as so many elements of Roman culture were, from Greece - entering Roman culture by way of Etruria). Both Mark Antony and the Emperor Commodus considered him to be a personal patron god. Size: 0.6" H (1.5 cm)

Provenance: acquired Feb 24, 2012 from Collector Antiquities, London, England, who acquired it prior to 2000
