Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 28 x 41 1/2 in./71 x 105.4 cm Metropolitan Printing Co., N.Y. One of the better known American actresses of the turn of the century, Lillian Russell was known for her beautiful singing voice and captivating stage presence. Already into her mid-forties, her performance in the George Broadhurst and George V. Hobart's romantic comedy, Wildfire, was so well received that a movie version was made seven years later. The story revolves around the widow Henrietta Barrington and her frowned-upon love for horses and horse racing. After inheriting a racehorse named Wildfire, she must hide her fondness for the sport in order to keep up social appearances, but ultimately proves that an intellectual, independent woman need not disguise her true passions. The feminist nature of this role would foreshadow the actress's own life story, as within three years she became a prominent voice in the women's suffrage movement.
