Description
This is a very fine and rare carved wooden slit gong or drum with traditional barrel form of a hollowed out log with large slit on top with areas carved thinner for the tone of the drum. The Drum features a finely carved ancestor mask/head which also forms a small loop handle and some brass tacks, now rusted. A Very rare find. The drum measures 17 x 7.5 inches. Songye peoples, Congo / DRC , central Africa. Provenance: Ex. Dr. Ken Adelman, Former director USAID Zaire, field collected prior to 1975.
