General Sullivan in 1778, Calls an Army Fidler to Providence during Height of Revolutionary War

[Sullivan, John]. [American Revolution]. Autograph Letter Written by J.M. Green on Behalf of Gen. John Sullivan. Providence, Dec. 5, 1778. Folio. [1]p. plus integral address leaf. Old folds and minor wear, very good.

Letter written from Continental Army Headquarters at Providence requesting that Colonel Henry Jackson send over "the Dutch fidler" from his regiment, presumably for the evening entertainment of General John Sullivan. Jackson's regiment was stationed at Pawtuxet, just outside of Providence. Both units would participate in the Battle of Providence, which took place on August 29, 1778. The letter reads: "Sir, General Sullivan desires you will send the Dutch fidler from your detachment to Head Quarters by the first of the evening. I am sir yr humble servt. J.M. Green, agt. Ad Genl." An interesting insight into camp life in the American Continental Army.
