Description
Vintage 1840's Double Weave Jacquard Antique Coverlet by Hugh Gilchrist
This cotton and wool indigo and white double weave jacquard coverlet has a complex floral medallion design with an unusual (especially for Indiana) conch shell and seaweed nautical themed background. The border is a complex mashup of an Indiana courthouse, urns, exotic birds feeding their young, mosques, and elaborate floral and tulip bouquets. There is a seam down the center, and a fringe on the bottom end only.
The book "Indiana Coverlet Weavers and Their Coverlets" identifies the maker as a Scottish Immigrant named Hugh Gilchrist (1806-1857) who eventually settled in Franklin County, Indiana.
The coverlet measures 80" X 92" and is in excellent condition with light surface dirt in places, the occasional moth nibble in the blue wool and no holes or fade. The coverlet feels strong and sturdy overall.
