Central Asia, Tibet, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine leather tinder pouch with a folding flap adorned with a circular greenstone fragment, a steel striking blade, and a storage pouch on the interior that would have held a piece of flint. The pouch is surmounted by a slender brass suspension loop and has a pair of leather straps looped around it. The tinder pouch (also called a firestarter pouch or a "chuckmuck") is a portable fire-lighting kit that was hung from a belt when not in use. They can also be worn as ceremonial jewelry among ethnic Tibetans. Size (w/o leather straps): 4.2" W x 2.875" H (10.7 cm x 7.3 cm).
