‘Newcomes’ followes the lives of Colonel Thomas Newcome and his son Clive, containing hundreds of references to the popular and educated culture of the time giving an idea of life in Victorian England. The ‘Arthur Pendennis’ named as the editor on the title page is, in fact, a character from Thackery's novel, ‘Pendennis.’ ‘The Newcomes’ was published in 23 monthly numbers (the last a double issue) from October 1853 to August 1855
