McClelland Barclay (St. Louis/Chicago/NYC,1891-1943) Cast bronze bookends with high relief ivy leaves. Signed on back of each. 4" x 3 1/2" x 4 3/4" high. Barclay was an illustrator for Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, and others, made many Hollywood movie poster. McCelland Barclay was a Lt. in USN reserves and after Pearl Harbor went on active duty, serving aboard three battleships, the USS Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Maryland & cruiser USS Honolulu. While doing sketch work for the navy aboard the USS Landing Ship, Tanks-342 as Lt. Commander on July 18, 1943 his ship was torpedooed off the Solomon Islands and was killed in action, his body was never recovered. Condition Fine.
