Arthur Clifton Goodwin (New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, 1864 - 1929) 9 1/2" H x 11 3/4" W, sight, watercolor on paper of Boston street scene. Monogrammed lower right, "A.C.G." Arthur was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and later he and his mother moved to Chesea, MA. He was a self-taught American Impressionist painter, and did not begin painting until the age of 30. He is best known for his urban paintings of dock views, city scapes and landscapes. He moved to New York in 1921 where he maintained a studio on Washington Square. He also resided in Chatham, NY where he painted quite a few rural scenes; however, urban scenes remained his favored subject. He was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists, and the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters. He exhibited at the St. Botolph, Doll nd Richards, Vose Galleries and Copley Gallery. In 1929, he returned to Boston and died a few months later. His work can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Union Club, Boston; Addison Gallery of Art, Andover, MA; and Colby College, Me, as well as many private collections. Good condition.
