This lot consists of a large oil painting on board, done in the Universal Constructivist style of Joaquin Torres Garcia (Spanish-Uruguayan, 1874-1949). A hand-painted inscription at lower right reads, "J.T.G. 32". This framed piece measures approximately 34.5" x 25.75", with an approximate image sight of 25.5" x 17.25".

This work exemplifies the artist's use of a geometric grid system with schematic images or signs, articulating abstract ideas through the representation of objects, and using recognizable symbolic images from daily life. As described by one critic, "The resulting intersecting structure expressed a universal cosmic order... [Garcia] would distribute on the picture surface schematic figures or objects, which stood as symbols for specific humanistic notions (hope, love, justice, for example)."

In a self-description contained in his illustrated manuscript "La ciudad sin nombre" Torres Garcia writes: "Today, above the noise of the city, of any city, on the last house on a street; a sad street or a happy one, sunny and full of trees, there is a man who thinks; he thinks for all. Meanwhile, the other move to and fro; they live, they work, they are born and die; and he, alone there, thinks. Why do we say that this man thinks? Because he thinks on the scale of the whole world. A geometrician, he measures and combines, weighs and analyzes; he composes. And divine sounds, ideas, clarity, and light emanate from his composition, forms newly born. He works in and on eternity."
