Armando G Menocal (1863 - 1942). Oil on Canvas. Measure 29"in H x 34"in W and 38"in H x 44"in W with frame. Armando G. Menocal was born in 1863 in Havana, Cuba. He was a member of one of Cuba most celebrated families whose success in politics and business made them significant forces in Cuban history. After an education in the private schools of Havana where Menocal also learned French and English, he entered the Academy of San Alejandro where he completed at the age of seventeen years a Certificate in drawing and painting under the mentorship of Miguel Melero, an important and socially prominent patron and painter. Menocal went to Spain to further his artistic education where, at the age of 21 he won a second prize in the National Exposition of Madrid. He returned to Cuba in 1890 establishing himself as an up and coming history and genre painter with a brighter and more saturated palette. Menocal also distinguished himself on the revolutionary side in the War of Independence. Later, he became a Professor at San Alejandro where he held the Chair of Painting. In 1927, after the Cuban Presidency of his cousin Mario G. Menocal, Armando became the Director of the Academy of San Alejandro. He died in Havana in 1942 and is remembered as an important force in the development of modern Cuban painting.
