Hand-colored aquatint engraving, heightened with gum arabic. Engraved by Hurlemann from the painting by Carl Bodmer. Image approx. 40x36 cm (15¾x14¼") on sheet 60x40 cm (23¾x17¼"), taped into mat with top and bottom margins curled over to reduce size.
Bright and richly colored plate from the atlas which accompanied Prince Maximilien of Wied's account of his travels into the interior of North America in the early 1830's. There were editions in Germany, France, and England, with the same atlas, issued in France, used for the various editions, and the captions are in French, German and English, and the imprints of all three publishers are in the plate. Without Bodmer's blindstamp in the lower margin.
Condition
A little toning to paper, mat burn; very good.
