Item Details
Description
Magnificent diamond necklace, circa 1985.From the Estate of Columbia Motion Pictures Chairman Leo Jaffe and his wife Anita Jaffe,a riviere platinum and diamond necklace of extraordinary quality.Seven of the largest stones have GIA certificates. The largest diamond is I color, VS2 clarity and weighs 2.15 carats. The second largest diamond is 1.75 carats, H color and VS1 clarity and the third largest diamond is 1.67 carats, J color and VS2 clarity. The fourth diamond is 1.28 carats,VS2 clarity and is graded I color. The fifth diamond is 1.27, H color and VS2 clarity. The sixth diamond is 1.01 carats, H color, SI1.The seventh diamond is 1.00 carats, and H color, VS1 clarity. All the GIA lab reports were done in the last eight weeks, with the last four done as recently as November 5th.//////////////////////////////////////////David Killen Gallery bought the Estate of Leo and Anita Jaffe in NYC, and the necklace was part of the jewelry items in the esatate.//////////////David's notes:I cannot see any imperfections in any of the 95 diamonds, although there are probably tiny flaws in every diamond (that would be equal to a VS grade at GIA) that make up the necklace. In other words, the diamonds all appear flawless and white. The 95 diamonds perfectly match the first seven diamonds in color, cut and clarity.I am speaking from experience, I am a graduate gemologist and jewelry dealer for the past 40 years. The diamonds from the top to the bottom all look like they were cut from the same large stone, they are so perfectly matched. This is a work of art achievement in terms of the skill and craftmanship of matching each diamond to the next. This necklace was probably worn to one if not more Oscar presentation nights.Length is 16 inches.//////////////////////////////////////////////There are 95 round diamonds total.Except for the 2.15 carat at the bottom, for every diamond on one side, there is a near identical diamond on the other side. The first 32 round diamonds(16 on each side) starting from the clasp weigh approx .10cts each, the next 36 round diamonds(18 on each side) weigh approx 15cts each, then there are twenty-seven round diamonds ranging from .20cts to 90cts(estimated)...to the 6th and 7th diamonds which are GIA 1.01 and 1.00, to the largest center diamond which is 2.15 carats. The GIA stones are the largest diamond and the bottom and the three stones on both sides of the 2.15ct, seven diamonds altogether.//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////David Killen price analysis:It is a little difficult to value a piece as complex as this necklace, but I suggest you look at it this way.The largest diamond, the 2.15 carat, if I had to go purchase this stone by itself, the wholesalers in NYC would charge me at least 15,000.The next two diamonds on either side of the 2.15ct, the 1.67 and the 1.75 carat would cost me about 7500.00 each. That is 30,000.00 so far.Now the next two diamonds, the 1.27 and the 1.28 carat would set me back around 6000.00 each, and the next two diamonds, the 1.00 and 1.01 carat would run me at least 5000.00 each. The total for just the first seven diamonds would cost me wholesale around 52,000.00.The remaining 88 diamonds, would cost me around 20,000 to 30,000 depending on where I got them but that means just the diamond material in the necklace, if you had to buy all the stones would set you back 80,000.00.That's not counting the platinum, the labor and the difficulty matching the stones.I feel anywhere from 50,000.00 to 70,000.00 for this necklace is a bargain.
Condition
Good condition overall, the word "Plat" appears on the back of one of the clasps. There are two clasps for length adjustment.Scroll down the photos on the left to see GIA reports on the largest three. All diamonds appear to be original. The GIA reports state on the largest three, no florescence or in the case of one, faint florescence. The diamonds face up white, with maybe a faint slight tinge of yellow, that comes and goes.It has the general appearance of white color diamonds.
