Winter Sunset. Oil on board. Signed and dated '10' lower right. Measures 15.5 in. high x 26 in. wide, (with frame 25 in. high x 31 in. wide).
Ole Juul was born in 1852 in a fishing village in Norway. Juul was a student of Anders Askevold and studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. When he finished his education in 1882, the economic conditions permitted few artists to support themselves by their art in Norway. Juul had to earn money as a photographer and lived for many years in Elverum. Juul painted in solitude for many years and had a breakthrough in 1922 at the age of seventy with a major exhibition at Blomqvist art shop in Oslo. Newspapers' art critics were positive about the exhibition, referring to him as "a painter of considerable talent."
