Watercolor on paper 15 1/4 x 9 in. (sight), 21 3/4 x 5 3/4 in. (framed). Harbor scene of WWII freighter ship "City Of Joliet". The following is his obituary from the Chicago Tribune: Rev. Edward J. Dowling, 89, a Catholic priest and member of the Chicago province of the Jesuit order, a teacher, author and artist, died Saturday in Colombiere Jesuit Community Center in Clarkston, Mich. Father Dowling, a native or Rockford, taught engineering graphics at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit for 30 years. Before that he taught for a year at Loyola Academy in Wilmette. He was an authority on the history of travel and commercial shipping on the Great Lakes. He wrote "Lakers of World," published in 1967, and numerous magazine articles on Great Lakes shipping. As an artist he was known for his paintings of ore boats. He was former president of the Marine Historical Society of Detroit and the Great Lakes Maritime Institute in Detroit. He also was vice president of the Steamship Historical Society of America. He graduated from Loyola University, Chicago, in 1930. That year he entered the Jesuit order. He completed religious studies at West Baden College, West Baden, Ind., and was ordained a priest there in 1940. Mass was said Thursday in Colombiere Chapel in Clarkston. "On May 27th, 1942, German planes attack convoy PQ 16. U.S. freighter Alamar is bombed and hit approximately 100 miles southeast of Bear Island. British corvette HMS Starwort, tug HMS St. Elstan and submarine HMS Trident rescue all hands (36 merchant seamen and nine Armed Guard sailors) USS Trident then torpedoes and sinks the irreparably damaged freighter as it is a hazard to navigation. U.S. freighter Mormacsul is sunk by a direct hit and three near-misses. Three of the ship's crew perish in the attack. The survivors (36 merchant seamen and the 9-man Armed Guard) abandon ship and are rescued by HMS Starwort and a British tug. U.S. freighter City of Joliet, damaged by near-misses was abandoned the next day in the Barents Sea. All hands (including the 11-man Armed Guard detachment) reach safety on board British tug HMS St. Elstan and Free French corvette Roselys. ref. used:Cressman R.
