Carrying all of his worldly possessions in a small bundle & with but a few cents in his pocket, he started for the shores of the Mississippi river, for he had decided to seek his fortune on the river.At the age of 19, he was in command of his own steamboat on the river. The first of a fleet of 13 steamboats which he owned and operated on the Mississippi and Chippewa rivers.
