King focuses on the history of the Mississippi River, colonization of Louisiana and founding of New Orleans, the Ursuline Sisters, Indian Tribes and troubles, Cession to Spain and Spanish Domination, Ante-Bellum New Orleans, and the Convent of the Holy Father.

In addition to the fascinating contents, this book features dozens of in-text illustrations depicting important landmarks, Creole people, French quarters and styles, and expressions of Mardi Gras. According to Smith in ‘Southern Queen’,

“King’s account of the city contained very little to offend its inhabitants, and much to appeal to Northern readers. This account of New Orleans was remarkable for the degree to which it embraced the city and its peculiar brand of Southern Romanticism. Resurrecting several well-established antebellum clichés about New Orleans.”

This 1895 first edition includes 83 illustrations by Frances E. Jones.
