Richard J. Murphy (1929-2006) was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1951. In 1952, he won election as president of the National Student Association. He served as the Assistant Postmaster General of the United States from 1961 to 1969. During his tenure, he encouraged the hiring and promotion of minorities. He attended every Democratic National Convention from 1952 to 2000, and served as assistant to the chair of the Democratic National Committee, Lawrence F. O'Brien. He also worked as vice president of Time Warner Cable and director of government affairs for Unisys Corporation.
