Description
AN ANTIQUE MAP OF SPAIN AND PORTUGAL, "Accuratis sim a totius Regni Hispaniæ, Portugalliæ..." AMSTERDAM, 1668-1680, hand colored engraving on paper, a page fragment from an atlas printed by Frederik de Wit (1629/30-1706), a title cartouche lower right with a personification of peace resting over a Spanish Royal Coat of Arms used exclusively from 1580-1668, and an explanation of notations showing the most populated cities, towns, small towns, villages, Archbishoprics, and Bishoprics, with two compass roses, hand numbered 6 in ink. 19 1/2" x 23" Note: The present coat of arms curiously includes the Portuguese escutcheon, a small but important inclusion on the present Spanish Coat of Arms Representing the Iberian Union, which ceased February 13, 1668. This act was probably issued and enacted by Queen Regent Mariana of Austria, after the death of her husband Philip IV and in the name of her son Charles II for whom she reigned in his place until her death in 1696. Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
