Description
AN ANTIQUE MAP, "Paesi Bassi," AMSTERDAM, CIRCA 1671, hand colored copper plate engraving on paper, a page fragment, the map compiled with known trade routes by land and waterways traversing Europe from the Netherlands to Rome; Geneva to Moravia, for use by merchants traveling during the 17th century, the top a banner runs with a record of prices for goods in different areas recorded from April 1651 centered by the Amsterdam Coat of Arms, below a figural cartouche of a Dutchman presenting a gold coin opposed by a southern merchant standing barefoot with a fishing pole atop bales of rope bound goods, with a single compass rose, and hand numbered 36 in ink. 18 1/2" x 22" Note: "Accurate new map of the passage and road from the Netherlands via Germany to Italy and via Swiss Countries to Geneva, Lyon and Rome for service of merchants and travelers in general at the request of the Ss. Scherer and Monforti, merchants shippers in Bregenz..." Provenance: Property from a Corporate Art Collection.
Condition
Unstable watercolor, lacerations at destabilized areas, toning, some tears, later backing and apparent restorations, creases, but overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age.
