Description
A very seldom-encountered type, with fine elephant grips carved with chevrons and retained by three silver bosses on either side. The guard of silver with bud quillon finials and chiseled overall with foliate motifs. The exceptional Polish or Hungarian blade well forged with fullering and pronounced back edge. A pair of Genoa marks struck at the left forte, the right forte with a finely inlaid Virgin Mary and Infant Christ in gold, above a pair of candles in gold and silver and sprig with an elaborately figured gold inlay panel to the base. Second half of the 17th century. Minor wear and rubbing. A small number of saber blades bearing the Theotokos, or Virgin and Child, is known. They are generally held to have been made in Poland, Serbia, Greece and Russia during the 1600s.
