Description
American sabers of the Civil War period were often based on French patterns. This cavalry officer's saber is Chatellerault Armory marked on the spine with an 1844 model date and November 1864 date of manufacture. American importers brought in many French made swords before the war and privately made French swords during the war, but wartime government production usually fell under the Emperor's embargo on the supply of government arms to the American belligerents. CONDITION: Excellent. Excellent grip, toned mildly toned hilt with very good definition to the cast floral motifs. Blade is unetched, with visible maker and inspection marks and stamps, blade pad in place, good edge and point. Metal is smooth, bright mixed with grey stains. Scabbard is bright with brown age staining. The name "Verle" is engraved in script at the scabbard throat. (SR)Blade Length: 36"Overall Length: 41 - 3/4" Condition: Dimensions:
