Description
Saints Gleb and Boris, Russian metal travelling icon with enamel, 19th century, size 13 x 9 cm, These brothers "strastoterptsi" (who have endured suffering) are the first canonized saints of the state of Kiev, Rush. They were sons of Volodimir (Russian: Vladimir), grand duke of Kiev, who officially introduced Byzantine Christianity to his people in 988, thus opening the gates to Byzantine culture. These brothers weren't killed because of their faith; they were murdered by order of their half-brother Svyatopolk, who considered them to be rivals for the succession to the throne. After their death they were widely venerated. A short time later they were canonized by John I, metropolitan of Kiev. They are represented as warriors on horseback. The authenticity of every icon is guaranteed.
