The author, Michel Chevalier, French economist & free market liberal is best known for his co-authoring, with Richard Cobden, the so called 'Cobden - Chevalier' treaty of 1860 which saw a relaxation of trade restrictions & tariffs between Britain and France.
The substance of this work first appeared in the 'Revue des deux Mondes' in 1857; in 1859 the enlarged French and English editions appeared simultaneously, the French edition as 'De la baisse probable de l'or'.
This 1859 English edition is published by Appleton in New York being the first American English edition.
